The Ryobi EMS190DCL ONE+ Review

Since this site started in late 2015, it’s become clear that some mitre saws are still standing the test of time, but we also need to take a look at some of the new mitre saws that are around.

We have looked at a wide range of saws but we haven’t really concentrated on cordless mitre saws. Over the last 18 months I have started to use more battery powered tools. The lithium batteries that are now available give you long battery life and also have a fast charging time. So why not move add a battery powered mitre saw to the collection. The first one we are going to look at is the Ryobi EMS190DCL ONE+ Mitre Saw, 18V (volt).

Things To Be Aware Of!

These saws are brilliant and versatile for all sorts of jobs but there a couple of key things that buyers need to beware of before we really start talking about the specifics of the saw.

Firstly, a lot of the prices are for the body of the saw only. This means you don’t get a battery included for the price. The batteries for this particular model come in different sizes giving you varying amount of battery life. The cost of the battery and charger can add a good £50 to £100 pounds onto the cost. The 1.3Ah batteries start at the £25 – £30 mark with the more expensive 1.5Ah batteries around the £60 mark. The decision will come down to how much battery life you will need. If you need constant power all day it may actually be better to consider two less powerful batteries and keep one on charge while the other is in use.

The second thing to consider is what brand of power tools you think you will use. Many of the big brands have interchangeable batteries for the whole range of power tools from drills to saws. As we mentioned the batteries are very expensive so it is probably worthwhile investing in the same brand across your cordless power tools.

That said the the Ryobi One+ tool range is pretty comprehensive. So if this is your first try at cordless power tools the Ryobi brand is a great place to start. Below is a list of some of the other power tools that the Ryobi One Plus batteries are compatible with:

Backward Compatible Batteries

All Ryobi One Plus batteries are backwards compatible for many years. They will all fit the saw. The more modern batteries are more powerful but the older ones will still fit. This consistency across fittings is a real selling point. You can buy with full confidence that the next Ryobi purchase you make in years to come will have the same battery fittings.

Okay, now we have got the warning about the batteries out of the way lets talk about the good points. The first and most obvious brilliant thing about the Ryobi EMS190DCL ONE+ Mitre Saw is it’s ease of use. Set up is really easy as you don’t have to be worried about being close to a plug. This is great if you are building decking outdoors or are working in remote places. For builders working on small jobs this is a big time saver. Get the saw out of the van, plug in the battery and you are ready to go. Just keep in the back of your mind you will need a power source to charge the battery.

We have talked a lot about the cordless element to this saw but there is one pretty big draw back. You can get a lot more for your money if you buy a conventional mains powered mitre saw. By the time you have shelled out for the body, battery and charger you could buy really high quality saws like the Evolution Rage 3+ Sliding Mitre Saw which will give you a much larger cut and will be better for a wider range of jobs.

The One Plus is a great looking saw, it is compact with a lot of thought put into the colour scheme to make your tool kit look professional and attractive. The handle has a rubber grip which is a really nice touch over other some other saws. It enables you to grip the saw well and gets rid of a lot of the vibrations you will feel on the bigger cuts.

In terms of the jobs that this model can be used for, it is a little limited compared to a lot of the other mitre saws we review. The cutting capacity is a maximum of 4 inches by 2 inches at 90 degrees and 1.5 inches by 3 inches at 45 degree. This is really suited to the smaller jobs like skirtings, floor boards and smaller structural timbers. When you get into the bigger jobs like cutting larger fence posts or wider boards I think your money would be better spent on a saw with a larger capacity.

The 18 volt battery gives plenty of power to the motor, running at around 4000 RPM. Plenty of power to deal with the size of jobs you can throw at it.

Easy Blade Change

It has a lock on the blade for easy blade change. I tend to carry around a couple of blades so that I can easily deal with plastic, metal and wood. The quick change of blades makes life easy if you are working on lots of different things.

Summing It Up

In conclusion, I love this saw. But more than that I love the Ryobi One+ Range. More suited to the DIY or occasional use person this will cruise through any jobs from a 2 x 4 size down. For most of us this is plenty. The saw is easy to use and can be used anywhere with minimum fuss. Whilst the outlay for all of the parts seems expensive, when you come to add to your collection the battery will be interchangeable between tools therefore lowering the cost of future purchases. Against some of the other powered mitre saws for the money I would say there is better but the flexibility of the Ryobi outweighs it for me.
